Over the span of his entire professional
career, Congressman Tim Murphy has focused on working
hard to make a difference in the lives of families and
children.
Having worked through college and graduate school, Congressman
Tim Murphy earned a PhD in psychology from the University
of Pittsburgh and served on the staff at several medical
centers, including Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Later he opened his own practice serving children and
families in Western Pennsylvania.
He now holds two Adjunct Associate Professor positions
at the University of Pittsburgh (Pediatrics, and Public
Health) and authored several articles including the
award-winning book, “The Angry Child,” a
book to help parents work with problem children. He
also became widely known as “Doctor Tim”
from his many appearances on local and national radio
and television.
In 1996 Tim Murphy was elected to the Pennsylvania
State Senate. He served in the Senate until 2002. In
the Senate he wrote Pennsylvania’s Patient Bill
of Rights and promoted job creation, educational improvements,
fiscal restraint, and the reduction of the tax burden
on families.
In 2002 Tim Murphy was elected to the United States
Congress where he now serves on the Energy and Commerce
Committee, one of the most powerful committees in the
House. He was also elected by his colleagues in 2004
to serve as President of his House colleagues elected
in the 108th Congress.
As one of the few healthcare providers on Congress,
Tim is a leader on healthcare issues. Building on his
state Senate work, he helped Pennsylvania’s PACE
program provide seamless coverage with the recent Medicare
Prescription Drug Act Pennsylvania’s elderly will
save an additional $150 million in prescription drug
costs. He is Co-chair of both the Congressional 21st
Century Healthcare Caucus and the Congressional Mental
Health Caucus.
Tim has worked to bring business and community leaders
together to promote new jobs and economic growth for
Western Pennsylvania. He has worked, just like he did
in the Senate, to lower the tax burden on families and
promote sound fiscal management all while our nation
faces the challenges of terrorism. And he has been a
consistent fighter to improve veterans benefits.
Congressman Murphy is a member of the Rotary Club and
several Chambers of Commerce. He is active with Habitat
for Humanity and is an advocate for the Rails to Trails
program. He has served on boards of the Western PA historical
society, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh,
and the National Aviary.
Congressman Murphy and his wife Nan live in Upper St.
Clair with their daughter Bevin. They attend St. Thomas
More Catholic Church in Bethel Park.
